Final Project Report

Hello! I’m Lucas, and I am very happy to present my final report for the WP Credits course, where I gather my contributions to the translation team, the challenges I overcame, and the lessons I’m taking with me. I hope my experience serves as motivation for more people to join and collaborate on new projects.

My Contributions

I contributed to the WordPress translation team, collaborating mostly on translating text strings. My main focus was translating strings for different themes or plugins, ensuring these translations were accurate by leaning on the various glossaries provided by the WordPress community.

Getting Started

I mainly started by reading the Translator’s Guide (es_ES Spanish from Spain) and the WordPress Core Glossary, which clearly explain the rules that translators must follow.

Challenges and Solutions

Overcoming the learning curve: I had a few minor issues getting my bearings and finding relevant information regarding translators. However, I solved this slight problem by asking both my mentor and other classmates who were taking the course at the same time as me.

Here are some of my contributions to the translation team:

Thanks to this WP Credits course, I have been able to appreciate and see what goes on “behind the scenes” of every plugin or theme (in the case of translation) that we effortlessly install on our devices, which usually work perfectly. You realize there is a massive amount of invisible work behind them.

Furthermore, I had the opportunity to interact with other people by joining different channels through the Slack app. This is where I suggested the translations I was making, and the moderators of these channels (for plugins and themes) gradually reviewed all the translations being submitted.

Something else you learn in this course is the ability to interact with other people who are doing the same work as you, allowing you to help one another by asking questions. It might seem trivial, but when it comes to working, having good communication among colleagues is highly important and helps any company you find yourself in immensely.

Personally, contributing to WordPress through this course has been quite interesting and enjoyable. I had used WordPress years ago but only for very basic things; I really liked diving deeper and making these small contributions to such a great open-source project like WordPress.

I truly recommend that you dive in and contribute to an aspect you are good at. The contribution process is quite clear, and if you get lost, you can always ask in the channels, where there is a community behind you that will surely answer your questions kindly and help you with whatever you need.
